About Me
My name is Rafi Djokosoetono and I am a fourth year mechanical engineering student at Northeastern University. Originally from Jakarta, Indonesia, I moved to Boston in the Fall of 2021 to pursue my academic career in engineering. My journey into engineering started with my dad. From a young age, he taught me how to fix cars and solve problems systematically. These hands-on experiences eventually led me to my first internship as a mechanic, which truly sparked my interest in how things work. And it showed me the satisfaction of solving technical and practical problems.
Now as a senior in mechanical engineering, I’ve built on these skills through academic and personal projects, as well as work experiences. Whether it’s working on my own car from maintenance to performance tuning or working on robots and testing them, I rely on combining creativity and technical knowledge to solve challenges.
Outside of engineering, I enjoy being outdoors to explore nature while capturing its beauty. My professional goal is to combine my technical skills and hand-on experience to work in the automotive industry, contributing to innovations that improve performance and design.

Shark Ninja
Mechanical Engineering Co-op
Experience Timeline
During my second co-op at SharkNinja, I was part of their robot vacuum team and worked on testing robotic systems to improve performance and user experience. My responsibilities consisted of creating and conducting tests for docking performance, threshold navigation, and brush design, focusing on challenges like hair entanglement. This role taught me valuable lessons about testing in development process, manufacturing, as well as how to balance technical requirements with user needs. I also gained hand-on expereince in problem-solving, teamwork, and data-driven solution making.

Avanti Battery Company
Mechanical Engineering Co-op
My first co-op was at Avanti Battery Company, a long-term energy storage startup where I worked on advancing battery technology through design and testing. I developed a new battery geometry configuration that enhance performance metrics. Additionally, I collaborated with cross-functional teams to establish in-house machining capabilities, reducing manufacturing costs while improving quality control. This experience gave me valuable insights into renewable energy technology, hands-on design, and the importance of teamwork in a startup environment.
As Head of Operations for PERMIAS Massachusetts, I managed logistics and operations for cultural events and student initiatives. I led a team of three officers to organize the New England Indonesian Festival, attracting 2,000 attendees, and worked with the City of Boston to secure permits. I also collaborated with PERMIAS New York City to host a basketball and soccer tournament, bringing together Indonesian students. This role strengthened my project management, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while promoting Indonesian culture.
March 2022 - March 2023
PERMIAS Massachusetts
Head of Operations
As part of PERMIAS Nasional, I developed and organized comprehensive data sets of Indonesian students studying in the U.S., ensuring accurate and up-to-date records. I collaborated with Indonesian government agencies and universities to collect data while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with privacy standards. This experience strengthened my skills in data management, coordination, and stakeholder collaboration to support the Indonesian student community.

Blue Bird Group
Head of Project (Masks)
I led an initiative addressing the impact of COVID-19 on Blue Bird drivers in Jakarta, resulting in the production of 25,000 masks with researched filters to enhance protection. I collaborated with PT. Duta Nichirindo Pratama to secure high-quality filter materials and worked closely with the drivers' wives to knit and produce the masks. This project strengthened my skills in project management, supply chain coordination, and community engagement, ensuring drivers had reliable protective equipment during the pandemic.

Blue Bird Group
Air Filtration Expert
As an Air Filtration Expert, I conducted a comprehensive research project with two filter manufacturing companies to identify and select optimal air filters for school buses serving Jakarta Intercultural School. After evaluating filtration efficiency and air quality impact, I helped the installation of air filters in 40 my school’s buses, reducing fine particulate matter and improving air quality for students. I collaborated with school administration and bus maintenance teams to ensure seamless execution, strengthening my expertise in air filtration technology, project coordination, and environmental health solutions.

Blue Bird Group
Vehicle Mechanic
As a mechanic at Blue Bird, I diagnosed, repaired, and maintained a fleet of 100 taxis and 20 rental cars, ensuring they operated safely and efficiently with minimal downtime. Under the supervision of a senior mechanic, I performed routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, brake inspections, and tire rotations, while also troubleshooting and addressing mechanical issues as they arose. This experience deepened my understanding of automotive maintenance procedures, safety standards, and fleet management, reinforcing my hands-on expertise in vehicle upkeep and repair.
beyond engineering
photography is how I document the world—whether it’s a high-speed moment on the road, an awe-inspiring landscape, or a spontaneous interaction that tells a story. Just like engineering, photography is about problem-solving, creativity, and seeing things from a different perspective.
